So, all this week, I keep hearing about a certain "fling" happening in the NFL. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and NFL Insider Dianna Russini were seen together, getting cozied up near a pool. Both are married and should be covering stuff about the NFL, since a certain draft is in two weeks. Every available outlet has taken it upon themselves to open this can of worms and run with this story, even trying to find stuff from the past to verify that. Russini has been "suspended" by the Athletic because of this. These available outlets have made this the top story of the sports circle. Yep, with a lot of events and games happening right now, this was the main thing to worry about.
Honestly, I don't care about this, even though this is mentioned in the first paragraph of this piece.
If you are a Quentin Tarantino fan, you probably watched the movie, Jackie Brown. (Here comes a spoiler.) There is a scene where Robert DeNiro and Samuel L. Jackson riding in a van, and DeNiro pulls over after confessing something to SLJ. SLJ gets angry at DeNiro and shoots him. As DeNiro is dying, Samuel says, "What the (bleep) happened to you? Your (bleep) used to be beautiful." This is my opinion of the sports media right now, they used to be beautiful, and I don't know what the (bleep) happened to it. Maybe I'm an old man yelling at cloud, but I want my sports media to update me on scores and how the team win or lost and what was the analysis on the game. This simple formula drew me into sports. Now, the concept is more of a gossip column or an opinioned cluster...you know what.
Yes, sports had gone through outlets that experts' opinions were stating the facts and brought a little bit of gossip to it. But that was barely mentioned, it wasn't the focal point of the sports broadcast. It wasn't the steak or even the potatoes of the entree, it was more of the parsley. Sure, Around The Horn, Pardon The Interruption or even The Best Damn Sports Show Period would mention certain topics outside of the realm, but not have it be the majority of your
Come on, sports media, it's time to wake the (bleep) up. Time to take back coverage of professional sports. I want my scores, my stats, my analysis of the game, the key moments of said game. I want interviews of the players on both the winning and losing squads. I want you to cover ALL of the teams, looking at you, Four Letter Network. The coverage of the Masters was with Jason Kelce being a goof. The draft is in a week, anyone want to cover that? WrestleMania is this weekend, want to jump on that, Four Letter Network since you own the broadcasting rights to the PLE? The bias on players, particularly a certain QB in Ohio has become nauseating, it's time to fix it. Downplaying certain leagues like the NHL is crazy, you can do better. Everything I just said can be fixed and the world can be a better place, unfortunately, this is all but a pipe dream.
There is a word in Spanish that defines this Russini/Vrabel drama. That word is chisme. I did not sign up for this when it came to following sports. Sure, there will be times when the chisme will saturate into the actual game, but it's best to mention it and move on.
(Also, if these two are doing the hanky panky while married to other people, FOR SHAME!)
TMZ has a sports department that specializes in chisme. If that's your golden ticket, then call them. Otherwise, limit the chisme in my sports.
(Side note: The wrestling media is also becoming a headache. Don't think you escaped my wrath.)
